Wisdom From The Apprentice: Martha Stewart

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

While flipping channels, I stopped on CBS last night to see Martha Stewart playing the role of Donald Trump on her version of “The Apprentice.”

I never watch this, honest, I swear. But as she was ripping the candidates up one side and down the other, one guy spoke up for himself. Not sure who he was, but he didn’t take any bull and when confronted with a situation and why he did what he did, he said this:

“A difficulty managed is an opportunity gained.”

I like that, I really like that. I am going to apply that to my day!

Picture If You Will

Monday, October 17th, 2005

Just curious, do you, as a Tablet PC Blog reader, like to see a photo of the person you are reading?

I read several blogs, many Tablet PC, and for the most part, I find myself wondering what that person looks like. Now, on personal blogs, you can usually find a photo of the owner somewhere. Not that many Tablet PC blogs have photos around (to those that do, I am of course, not speaking of you). Maybe that is because the focus is more on technology, and it is less personal.

Then again, many newspapers and technology magazines have photos of the authors. Most books and novels have photos too.

I’ve debated putting up a photo of myself. Mosty becuase I tend to look for them on sites I read (and am dissapointed when I can’t find one). I am not sure why, but I like to know what someone looks like.

So, I am not really asking if you want to see me. I am just wondering, does seeing a photo of the blogger/journalist make the blog seem more personal, more friendly? Or does it, should it, even matter?

Maggie Is Home

Monday, October 17th, 2005

Though it isn’t my place to announce news on Rob’s family, I did want to let everyone know Maggie is home resting and recovering.

Since Maggie is home, there is no need to send cards via the Hospital web site. But I’d like to thank everyone who helped get the word out, I know Maggie and her family were touched by the kindness.

You can read more about her condition on Maggie’s Update page, and KSDK did a news segment on the Bushways, which can be viewed here. It will give you a good idea of how appreciated all of the e-Cards were.

Cards for Maggie

UPDATE: Maggie is home.

Thanks for sending the e-cards to Maggie. Since she is no longer a patient, I’ve removed the links to the hospital’s e-card page. Please see this post for the Update.

Probably the only thing worse than cancer is a child with cancer. Meet Maggie, she has been in a battle against brain cancer for some time now, and may soon undergo her third brain surgery.

You probably know or have heard of Maggie’s father, Rob (Rob Bushway - Tablet PC MVP). Well he wants to do something special for Maggie’s hospital room (which will be her home for the next 2-3 weeks). He wants to “Plaster her walls with e-Cards!”

So that’s why I am asking everyone who reads Tablet Minds to go to the Hospital’s e-Card page and send her a card (link removed since she is home now). It is free, the response so far has been amazing.

You need her name: Maggie Bushway.

Now, how about a Tablet PC user challenge? I am asking every blogger who reads this site to ask your readers to do the same. And maybe we can snowball this idea. With luck, an A-list blogger will join in and Maggie’s walls will be double-layered with e-Cards! (use “Cards for Maggie” somewhere in your post for google purposes)

You can check up on Maggie’s progress here, and if you want your heart to melt, just take a look at this cutie pie!

Tablet PC Users Unite!

More important than the cards, Rob is asking for your prayers. I hope you, and your readers, can send Maggie plenty of both.

Tablet Neglect

Thursday, October 6th, 2005

I realized today that it had been quite some time since I’ve posted anything about Tableting. Then it struck me, I’d been using my desktop for the past 2 weeks.

(By the way, this is post #40, that qualifies as some sort of milestone doesn’t it? Let the celebration begin!)

At the moment, I am being called to do some graphic design work for 2 web projects we have where I work. I know, you wouldn’t know I do web design by looking at this site’s layout (but I really don’t feel like doing that sort of stuff in my free time, so do forgive).

I’ve been deep into Photoshop CS (ver 1), and needing the dual monitor set up I have on the desktop (not to mention larger monitors). But, there were times where I wished I had my Tablet connected in some way. I really needed to use the stylus at several points, and instead was forced to use the mouse.

At one point, I needed the stylus so much, that I fired up the tablet, used Remote Desktop to connect to my desktop PC where I had Photoshop open, and used the stylus to make my brush strokes remotely. Talk about taking the long road!

That process made me realize that I needed a Wacom Tablet for my desktop. But see, it is very frustrating to think I need to re-create the tablet experience on my desktop. At this point, I don’t do enough work on my Tablet to where a Docking Station makes sense.

Then again, maybe I need to reconsider.
